A REAL ROOM TOUR

May 7, 2012

a real room toura real room toura real room toura real room toura real room tour
Dose of reality. Yes, you may have seen our previous kid room tours (here, here,Β and here), but this is more of reality. The not styled, very much played in, kid decorated room of True and Brave. I told them to clean it up and this was the result. Looks a lot different from when I clean up, but hey, I guess it was clean. Sort of.
If you read blogs and get frustrated about your own state of messiness, thinking that you can never get things as neat as the homes you see online. I am here to tell you, that at least for me, my home is never as clean as my home tours that circulate. I try to keep it as tidy as I can, but life happens everyday.Β
I speak for myself, but I think as a blogger, you can get easily caught up in how you want your life portrayed online. Or as a blog reader, which I am also, you get caught up in the wanting that and wanting this and thinking those things will make you happy. I love reading blogs and I think there is a wealth of inspiration and learning that comes from some of them, but make sure to keep your heart in check. Always be content (and thankful) with what you already have and be honest. I read something from Proverbs this morning that stood out to me, “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.”Β Oh man. I don’t want my bones to rot.
Happy Monday! Be wise and discerning in your blog reading today.

p.s. don’t you love how brave laid out her clothes on her bed? hilarious!

oh, thank you for this. I am completely one of those bloggers who loose heart seeing others lifes and houses. mine just seems plain old boring and you always seem to make everything seem real x

Thanks so much for sharing, Ruby! πŸ™‚

  • Thanks for the proverb ! Always good to keep the goods priorities !

  • as weird as it may sound, but I love lived in homes. there is a huge difference between dirty and messy and for some reason I feel more at home if there is a bit of mess involved. if I go into immaculate homes I always feel like I'm in a hotel of sorts and it's never comfortable πŸ™‚ thanks for saying it as it is and being brave enough to document it along the way.

I like how you think πŸ™‚ I just shared some thoughts in a similar vein this morning. I love the girls' vintage beds– so pretty!

Thanks for sharing this as it is. I always try to portray real life in the blog, because life is not perfect and the blog should not be either!

  • thank you for this post.
    such a good reminder!

  • What fantastic thoughts! It's so easy to become overwhelmed with what's out there in the blog world. Thanks for sharing, Ruby. I miss you!

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE! Totally hilarious the way she laid out her little clothes! So, so sweet. And what a good thought to keep in mind — I'm always harping on this to my Julia, 'Be happy with what you have' — also good for us Big Kids to remember….

  • cutest room ever. i would have loved for that to have been my room as a little girl.

  • It is a gorgeous room. I would have loved that when I was little.

So sweet! More like styled messiness; reminds me of an Anthropologie catalogue. I especially love the side-ways baskets and the house-shaped trinket displays.

thanks for writing this! I appreciate your 'keeping it real' attitude. That last paragraph is something I think about everyday. Btw, I like decorating rooms with hung up clothes. Right now I have an apron hanging up in the living room on a hook, and I used to have this tutu style dress hung up as well. I need to actually try to wear the dresses that get hung up though. Usually what happens is i just regard it as decor and forget to wear it haha.

Love that you wrote this! I've been thinking about this too. Let's keep our hearts in check

  • Laura says:

wait a minute…this room looks AMAZING!

I wish that my “real” looked as beautiful as yours!!!
my “real” has old cheese quesadillas under the beds and granola bar wrappers on the carpet.
    seriously.

but yes…I learned a few years into blogging not to compare….not to think everybody's life is better and neater and cuter than mine.

Basically, I learned to love my mess πŸ™‚

  • LOL! Trust me, my daughter's room showed up in Babiekins magazine looking three times messier than this room! I thought about giving it an overhaul, but decided not to. She was only three, and I thought…reality is messy and still gorgeous πŸ˜‰

I love the little iron daybed! Reminds me of the pioneer-era iron bedsteads we used to sleep in on our ranch when I was a kid.

  • Felicia says:

That is pretty cute how she laid out her clothes πŸ™‚ Lived in homes are beautiful. I love their room, those beds are amazing!

thanks for keeping it real πŸ™‚

Awww, love these! I love that oldschool frame, too. Really vintage/romantic feel to it.

My apartment is actually usually clean, but only because I'm a FREAK about cleaning and probably spend more time on it than I should. Like, there are a lot of times when things DO get messy, but I'm quick to clean them. I guess it's just an up and down thing, haha!

My apartment by no means, though, looks like the house tours circulating the net! Maybe some day…!

  • Christie says:

You succinctly put into words what was in my heart…I just didn't know how to express it…
About how I want my life portrayed online, or the life I wish I had, because online you can be whoever you want people to think you to be. I'm a work in progress in being happy with the real me and letting people in to see the real deal…warts and all.
I had been struggling with crafty-blog-eye-candy-coveting and I'm thankful for the Word…the truth sets me free! Thanks!
PS…this is my first visit to your blog, I found you via “Oh, hello friend” and I found her via a pic reference on Stitch Craft Create Magazine blog. I'll be back!

  • Aarika says:

Well this makes me feel so much better! I frequently read your blog and look at your pics on flickr and think “how does she do it?!” I only have two girls but my tiny apartment usually looks like a tornado ripped through it!

  • So well said! Thank you for sharing the styled and real tours…both are appreciated! ~Deirdre

  • well said. thanks for posting and thanks for keeping it real.

  • Kira says:

I think envy is something that can easily take over for someone who reads a ton of blogs. I appreciate you keeping it real πŸ™‚

  • Mama Liz says:

Ruby, its a relief to see that you LIVE in your home. Oh the pressures of having a perfect house and kids all the time, it was starting me make me feel bad that I dont live that way. THANK YOU for being real! LOVE IT!!

  • Malori says:
