makes them do a jitter dance

June 26, 2013

yummiesyummiesyummiesyummiesyummiesyummiesTrue’s allergic to dairy. We figured this out when she was about 6 months old, since then she’s been a soy milk drinker. We have dairy milk in the house too, but the other girls naturally gravitate to that carton of soy milk that’s sitting in the fridge. Actually, I do too and I have a cup every morning! I add some protein to it and it gives it a thicker consistency that makes it extra creamy (silk soy milk is already pretty creamy!). I used to have a cup (or 2) every afternoon too, but I was going way overboard in my intake of milk products, so I cut back and stuck to drinking it in the morning. Even though I limit myself to drinking it in the morning, it doesn’t stop me from serving my girls with some soy milk in various ways throughout the rest of the day.

I think it’s that little bit of sweetness that gets us. Besides having it with cereal, it is best for mixing in with smoothies or making popsicles (or just pairing it with some cookies!). You’ve got the natural sweetness from the fruit combined with the subtle sweetness in the vanilla Silk Soy Milk, and it’s come out perfect. No added sugar needed! We’ve tried other soy milks and Silk Soy Milk is the absolute best. The other ones tend to have an earthy flavor, but Silk really is silky. My husband thinks Silk is the gold standard of soy milks when it comes to flavor. The yumminess of it all makes my girls (even me!) do a jitter dance.

Silk Soy Milk and Strawberry Popsicle
makes about 8 – 10 popsicles (depends on your mold)

2 cups Silk Soy Milk Vanilla Flavor
2 cups fresh strawberries

Blend and pour into a popsicle mold (this one is ours), let freeze overnight, then enjoy!

Silk Soy Milk, Peach and Strawberry Smoothie
makes about 4 small servings

2 cups Silk Soy Milk vanilla flavor
1 cup frozen peaches
1 cup fresh strawberries (or frozen)

Just blend, pour, and drink!

    Ruby!

I babysit four kids and when I got to work this morning I saw there were strawberries that were going bad so I quickly used those strawberries and made the popsicles! They didn’t have vanilla soy milk, only plain, so I used that and added two tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of vanilla! Hopefully they’ll turn out as yummy as yours look! Thanks for the recipe!

Yay! Way to go putting those old strawberries to use. I know the kids are definitely going to love it!

I wish I’d seen the sailboat molds before I bought mine. I will try the silk & strawberries.

Cute pictures! I wanted to thank you for posting the link to the blog post, “The Good Mom” a while ago. I bookmarked it and keep going back to it. I am a new mom and it is a super encouraging message for me! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Oh! I’ve been going back to it too. There’s so much in there that perfectly described what I struggle with as a mom. New mom or mom of 4 kids, we all struggle with the same things and can definitely benefit from encouraging one another.

  • YUM! I love silk! My favorite is vanilla. 🙂

You have to be careful with soy milk and be sure to check the ingredients – a lot of them have added sugar, and it is near the top, which means it is a high percentage. Plus all the extra additives in it as well. Some soy has over 5 ingredients! Just some food for thought.

    • mycakies says:

Very true. It is the second ingredient and 8 grams. Whereas, our dairy milk has natural sugars at 12 grams, but the soy milk has less carbohydrates, so it kind of balances out. The main thing for us though is that our daughter gets her calcium and since she’s allergic to dairy, she gets it from soy milk, so besides having dairy at home, we’re stocked with soy milk too.

Thank you! Even though we’ve been drinking it for years now, it made me look at the label again and ask my husband about it (he’s a dietitian).

I prefer not to have unfermented soy, but we LOVE smoothies with peaches! What a treat!

  • I adore soy milk! I haven’t thought about using it for milkshakes and ice creams- definitely trying it soon! Enjoy your weekend =)

Great recipes AND simple! Gonna try it!

I love reading your blog. You are one inspirational woman and mom! I know you are into healthy eating so just wanted to mention to do a little research about soy-I have found several sources (a good one http://www.westonaprice.org/soy-alert) to be rather against it especially for kids. Don’t mean to offend anyone:)

    • mycakies says:

Hi Ann! No offense at all! I will definitely read the article you suggested and discuss it with Ben. Thank you for bringing up your concern. We would try almond milk, but she’s allergic to almonds, and rice milk doesn’t taste good to her either. I never thought about coconut milk like someone mentioned below, but it definitely something to try.

  • ann says:

We have dairy issues too and use almond milk (original, vanilla, chocolate) & coconut milk beverage (vanilla — coconut milk beverage in a 2 quart container, not in a can) for drinking. And for a dairy substitute in cooking where you don’t want it sweet or a coconut/almond flavor, my favorite is unsweetened coconut milk (SO Delicious is the brand I get , it is really nice and thick… we use this in any recipe… breads, pancakes, soups, etc

    • mycakies says:

We have never tried coconut milk! That sounds good! We can’t do almond because True has nut allergies too.
