He went by himself the first time (I was prepping for my classes), and he came back with $15 worth of fruits that we had never tried before! We also pretty much ate all the fruit in one sitting. We had rambutan, lychees, custard apple, mangosteen (my fave!), dragon fruit, and water apple. We didn’t venture to try durian (though I did have a durian dessert!). He took me back to the Tiong Bahru wet market a few days later and I loved looking at all the different things they were selling. Totally different from our farmers markets for sure!

It was so humid and steamy that once I took my camera out snap some pictures, my lens was completely covered in fog. That’s why that first picture looks somewhat cloudy, and I had to keep wiping the fog away to take more pictures!

What an amazing trip! I would love it. It’s hard to find new food to try here in Pennsylvania. I’m sure both of you love it!

    Hi Ruby,

Have you ever went to the Philippines? We have those fruits there as well. Called differently though, custard apple=atis, water apple=macopa

    • Rubyellen says:

I know! Shame on me, I’m filipino and have never been to the Philippines. I should ask my parents if they know those fruits by the filipino names.

Durian kind of scares me from its descriptions…what was the dessert like? I love the pictures! Jumbled, colorful markets like that are so exciting to me. I used to live in Dubai and it was relatively easy to get the more exotic fruits their, but I wasn’t really into any except passion fruit. Yum! Now in our little town, mango is as exciting as we can get, haha!

Durian IS smelly but has the taste and mouth-feel of the best custard you have ever eaten.
Once you eat some you become addicted. Seriously.

  • Are you living in Singapore now? I’m living/working in Malaysia. If you try the Durian, you’re braver than me! I can’t get past the dirty feet/garlic smell. I love the markets here. The fruit is possibly the best part of living in the tropics 🙂 Although all the berry posts on blogland this summer are sure making me miss the NW.

Best place to live, er, I mean EAT ever!
I lived there for three years…
The mere mention of Singapura gets me drooling immediately!

I love that picture of all the bags of fruit hanging! Beautiful shapes and colors.

Can’t believe I missed this post! I’m from Malaysia. If you ever come to Singapore again you should fly to Malaysia too. 🙂
