kid room dilemmas

May 11, 2017

I posted this dilemma (#firstworldproblems) in my Insta story, but thought I would share it here too. We cleaned up Soul and Glow’s room (see before here) and now we are debating on whether or not to leave the rug, use sheepskin, or let the floors steal the show. Glow likes the rug, but Soul doesn’t, so that doesn’t help the decision much. I like the rug, but I think it makes things look a bit cluttered. The bare floors are pretty, but it looks like it’s missing something. Maybe it needs some texture? The sheepskin does seem to solve that problem, but is the room more cozy with a rug? I don’t know. What do you think?

Wow, that room is gorgeous, you are SO talented!! What about a larger sheepskin ‘style’ rug (no sheep are that big, even pretend ones!) in the middle? Love it all though! xx

  • Jo says:

Love the rug on the first photo, nice and cosy ; )

  • Kayla says:

I like it with just the sheepskins!

  • Kristen says:

I say rug 🙂 but they all look great!

  • Susan says:

I love the rug, those sheep look to small and out of place for the space. I’d stay with the rug but if only 1 likes it maybe center it under their bed to still have the cozy feel.

I just realized the second photo showed the sheepskin, but I almost missed them… for some reason, I don’t like the look, maybe because they’re too small for the area. It looks kind of like you put bath mats next to the bed. I’d say keep the original rug but perhaps position it differently. Or – do you have something brighter? I imagine a pop of color matching a shade from the blankets. I think it looks cozy with the rug, definitely more minimal/simple without it… but I think it’s nice for kids to have something warm and inviting underfoot and when they’re reading/playing on the floor.

I’m curious – why doesn’t Soul like the rug??

I would do the sheepskins or a rug under each bed, personally! 🙂 But I’m not a mom yet, so don’t listen to me- that is strictly my design brain speaking. xx!

  • Kristen says:

The rug makes the room look nice and cozy. The sheepskins look too small. But since only one girl likes the rug I would stick the rug only under her bed. No it is not ideal design, but comfort and function are more important in a kids room.

I love all the pieces but together I think the rug is too busy. Too many lines with the rug and the bed rails! Are your floors light gray or white? They are beautiful!
What about a large round rug?
    Death Star? Jk.
Would a wall tapestry provide texture and leave the clean look, maybe? And how about some slippers by each bed instead of the little rugs… just ideas. Your style is my fave!

I think a round rug would look great too. I love the beds, they’re so sweet. I love your blog and never miss it!

  • lisa says:

i love the floors! I do love the look of the bare floor, but I think the sheepskins are my favorite. I really adore you’re style!

  • Toni says:

I love the rug! (I own it too!) The texture and pattern is perfect for the room and everything happening in it!

  • Anna says:

I say rug, but the girls should both find a common ground. Is there a spot before the two beds that you can place the large carpet on?

  • jane says:

I like the look of the room with bare floors, but for little ones I’d probably choose the rug…because cozy…although my girls never really seem to mind laying on the bare floor and all their playmobil could stand up better on it. 🙂

  • JuliAnne says:

I honestly feel like the bare floor looks best. I agree about the sheepskin looking too small and the rug looking too busy for the space. The floor is sooo gorgeous to cover up! Maybe a different smaller rug in between the beds would work? Good luck!! 🙂 P.S. I LOVE your blog. Always my favorite read. Thanks for being you!

  • What did you decide?? I really love the bare floor or the little sheepskins. But i love everything you do!

    • Rubyellen says:

I had bigger sheepskin to use in the space, so I’m playing around with that. I’ll share once I have things set.

  • Gloria says:

How about a painted “rug” design on the floor?

  • Daniela says:

I say rug or nothing, the sheepskins seem to create a weird space and clutter the floor.
I love seeing your girls’ rooms! Shared kids rooms are so inspiring as they creatively use space.

  • I am a sucker for wood floors and hate that my landlord makes us have area rugs when we have beautiful wood floors. I will say that it does look good with or without the rug in their bedroom though!

  • Agnieszka says:

I would try turning the rug around so the long side goes along with the beds lenght. I like it cosy and think it would be very welcoming to chill out/ play on the rug 🙂

  • Rebecca says:

I would keep the floor open, or buy a rug that is similar color to the floor.

  • tiffany says:

please tell where you got these beds!

  • Amy says:

Definitely the rug but turned the other way!

  • First, I think this room looks incredible!

I really like the look of the large rug, that goes from one bed to another. There are already so many small things all around, that the sheepskin could look something that has fallen from the bed. Plus that sheepskin never stays in place and always end-up under the bed or in a corner somewhere.

    I vote for the rug!

As i’m finding this blog post over 1 year after your posting, thanks to the wonderful Pinterest search tools, so my rug vs. no rug opinion doesn’t even matter anymore. But I am so very curious as to the source of the girls gorgeous Rattan bed frames. I found similar frames online but am wondering how well they will hold up. (Im thinking for my girls room, but I have 3 very boisterous boys who I have to keep in mind when purchasing furniture.) Your furniture source and thoughts on durability would be so appreciated!
