taos, new mexico

July 10, 2013

new mexicoBen’s family vacations were often spent in the Carson National Forest in New Mexico. His family travelled to the Taos and Tres Ritos area year after year to go camping, and this year, we’re all going to start our own memories there! We’re pretty excited because his mom and sister are meeting us there too. We can’t wait for lots of relaxing and hiking (I’d love to go river rafting too!). Ben and I are going to try to sneak out for a date at some point, and if any of you are from the area or are familiar with it, I would love some recommendations on things to do and eat in Taos or Taos Ski Valley!

Do you have any special trip planned this summer?

(Photo above is Ben circa 1981. I imagine if I had a son, he would look just like that!)

OH, I LOVE Taos! Living in Amarillo, TX, its a quick and easy weekend get away for us in winter and summer! Favorite restaurants: Breakfast: Michael’s Kitchen {has a great bakery too} and Dragon Fly Cafe and Bakery which has great outdoor seating under large umbrellas and a great brunch menu! Lunch: Taos Pizza Outback for huge pizza with creative toppings, Grahams which is right on the square, Taos Brewery a little off the beaten path but has a great menu extensive beer selection and a fenced in area with lots of outdoor games. For a nice dinner out, Doc Martin’s great food and atmosphere and for a fancy dinner check out the El Monte Sagrado, its a hotel with an amazing restaurant and a great “anaconda” bar which would be fun for drinks and dessert. We were just there last month and had a great time water rafting, we went with Los Rios River Runners and they were fantastic! Great guides and made it easy for pick up and drop off. Be sure to go see the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge {the Brewery is out that direction} as the view is incredible and there are always fun vendors and crafters out there too. Oh and the girls will absolutely love Twirl! Its a toy store just off the square with a huge wonderful whimsical playground in the back of it, a great area to let them burn some energy! I hope this helps! Have such a great time! ~Kaki

I was lucky enough to visit Taos while I lived in New Mexico. I went during their Sheep & Wool Festival, which happened to coincide with the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. I was into knitting at the time, so chose the wool over the hot air balloons. Maybe you can visit the Earthship community while you’re in Taos. It would make for some interesting family photos at least. Anyway, I look forward to hearing more about your vacation and the memories you create with your family.

My family is from a little ski town about an hour away from taos but taos was the next biggest town; So we were constantly there when I was growing up. Now we live in Texas but we still go to see family and there are a few restaurants that are a must. Orlando has some of the best New Mexico style food there, its a must every time we go! Grahams is good but a tad more fancy then most of the places we go ( perfect for a date night) , taos pizza outback is also really good. For breakfast we normally go to taos diner, its a tradition and we also like the world cup or wired? for coffee. Oh and the bent street deli is really yummy for lunch and close to some really cute stores. hope you enjoy your vacation in one of my favorite places – Te’Anna

Oh! What ski town?! We’re going to be staying in Taos Ski Valley! So if that’s the one, keep the recommendations coming!!!

I second Orlando’s! It has some of the New Mexican food in the state (I live just outside of Albuquerque). I’ve only stopped in Taos long enough to eat on my way further north, but it’s absolutely beautiful! You guys are going to have such a wonderful time there!

Orlando’s is definitely the place to go to eat! Enjoy your stay. My husband and me we lived 2 years in Taos and 2 years in Santa Fe. Now we try to find a place in Taos again. We just belong there, both writers and nature lovers. It would be great if somebody knows people who rent a house or look for a house sitter and let me know.
