After I shared my curly waves video, I realized I rarely left my natural curls/waves. So pretty much after I shared that video, I decided to go on a 30 day leave my natural curly hair challenge. I’m a week and a half into it, and it still takes getting used to. After I shower, I add some curling cream to it (to help get rid of frizz), then I scrunch and blow dry it a little. It’s a little less maintenance because I don’t have to wear curlers at night. On the days when my hair can’t decide if it wants to be curly or just looks more flat, I stick it in a bun.
Any one have any good product recommendations to spruce up curls, but not make it feel dry and crunchy?
I have curly hair and use Kerastase Discipline Mousse Curl Ideal. It’s a little on the spendy side, but helps give me soft curls and makes my hair really curly. The mousse followed by a little blow dry with the diffuser gives soft curls. Plus it smells soooooo good.
The mousse doesn’t leave it too crunchy?
Not crunchy at all!
The Living Proof Curl system was a game changer for me! It totally brought my natural curls back to life. On days I don’t wash my hair I just mist it with some water and my curls are back. I love it, especially the curl cream.
Never heard of this brand. I will check out amazon reviews for sure! Thank you!
Hey Ruby,
I have hair that’s very naturally curly. Usually if I’m letting it be I leave my conditioner in (my hair is super dry so this works), and I go. Once it’s dry if it needs a little defrizzing I’ll add jojoba oil or hair serum.
Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer is the best product I’ve ever used. It’s a little pricier than what you’d find in a regular store, but a little goes a long way, and it’s worth it.
Will definitely check it out and read on it!
Just rinse the shampoo out in the shower and after you towel dry, scrunch it with conditioner. It’s a lot more economical than fancy hair products and it leaves your hair soft without the frizz. I used to put gel in my curls back in high school to make them stay but I hated the crunchy wet look. I ran out one day and tried conditioner instead. Still love it more than any product I’ve tried since. Also, avoid blow dying if you can. Gives me an afro every time.
I will try that. I feel like if I leave too much conditioner, it looks too oily.
i love it the natural look! xx, rn
oh wow, that English is awful *i love the natural look
haha
No worries! I knew what you meant! 😉
I second Aveda Be Curly…though I haven’t used it in a few years. My next (and more economical) choice is the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl Style Milk.
Moroccan Oil products! Not only do they smell divine, but they also give my curls extra shine! I use the curl defining cream and treatment oil. It’s fabulous!
I do use those, but it doesn’t help much with frizz for me. Argh!
Your natural curls are very much like mine! My current curl routine involves lightly wrapping my hair in a turbie-twist post shower for about 15 minutes to get as much moisture out as possible. After that I apply some sort of silk/oil serum (Khiel’s is my favorite, but I’m currently out of it and seriously considering DIY-ing my own). After loosely running the oil through my hair, I scrunch SheaMoisture Curl Smoothie through my hair. It has the consistency of heavy conditioner, which you think would weigh hair down and make it greasy, but I can glob a decent amount on my hair without any negative side effects. After that I blow-dry upside down with a diffuser and at the end of it all I look like a glorious 80’s babe.
I will try the upside down thing! Thanks for the tip!
I have wavy hair that looks like the same curl pattern as yours! It is “beachy” (read: frizzy) and a little more limp than I would like but when I use miss Jessie’s quick curls and twist sections when it’s quite wet still, it dries in an almost bouncy curl that just needs a little scrunch up when dry. Keep it away from your roots though bc it’s a little heavy. I also spray my roots with dry shampoo as soon as they’re dry so ig st a little more lift at the roots.
Yes … beachy = frizzy to me too! I will need to check out Jessie’s quick curls. Thank you!
