it’s been quieter around here

June 30, 2015

Yes, 4 girls. Yup, they're all mine. #peoplealwaysask #truebravesoulglowIt’s been strange just having Soul and Glow to care for… there’s less food to make and less things to clean up (it’s always much more quiet). Even still, we really miss our biggest gals (and all the noise that comes with having 4 children)! Soul gets really sad sometimes because she really misses True and Brave. To make it as fun as possible for her, I asked her to give me a list of things she wanted to do while they were gone, and we have slowly been checking things off that list.

Since we got back from our mini road trip, I have been busy cleaning and purging through the kids’ rooms. I feel like I can’t rest until it’s done. I went to IKEA to pick up some bed sheets and have a pile of things to put away and save, and then even more to move on and donate. I think their little library is out of control; I’ve never been good at organizing their books. Any of you have any tips to help me get that under control?

We aren’t painting the rooms (though it desperately needs a fresh coat of white), but lots of purging and reorganizing, and a little bit of furniture shifting here and there. I’ll be sure to share the results of the cleaning soon.

I’ve been doing the same thing! We live in a tiny 2 bedroom 107 yr old house and I feel like it gets dirty so fast! We have 3 little girls so lots of clothes, toys and books…Im pretty good about getting rid of stuff but I have a hard time getting rid of the girls stuff because everything is attached to a memory! ah!

Good for you! My mom saved all my kids books, plus my three littles love books and have a hard time parting with any of them. I’m curious about getting them organized as well!

Purging is hard and so good at the same time! I organize their books by season, as much as possible. So I put away books that don’t pertain to the current season and I make sure we switch them on the actual day we change season. I guess I have been a little obsessed with the seasons since moving to SoCal, I want them to know about it. Of course it is not obvious for all books and I am sure seasons are less obvious for bigger kids’ books but that is what works for us now! They are always SO excited to rediscover books that were put away for months!

Hi. Similar to the comment above, I put all the “Holiday/Seasonal” books away in the bins of holiday decorations. It’s amazing how many Christmas books we own. Our homeschool reference and curriculum type books are in boxes by theme (us history, geography, etc) and only the ones for the current school year are accessible. All the others are in two large bookshelves in the house. They are split between chapter books, bible stories and books, and other misc kid books (hardbound and paperbacks on different shelves, theoretically) I wish I had more bookshelves though- we kinda hoard books around here. Our local thrift store (bay area) gives childrens books away free so we are always bringing home more. Every once in a while we will clean the shelves out and donate the duplicates, less-loved ones to cousins, or back to the thrift store. We keep the classics and the favorites.

    Good luck!
