Ben is the garden plotter as he meticulously plots all the veggies that go in. I was going through some old garden pictures and was so amazed at the different things we have grown over the years (see here, here, and here). We kind of forget because we start again for the different harvest seasons.
We haven’t done a winter garden in so long because the past few winters we either just had a baby or I just got pregnant. Though we always make sure to get our summer garden in. We just love tomatoes too much not to! Ben already ordered 14 tomato varieties so those are coming in mid-April. Last year we grew 34 different kinds, I wonder how many he plans to do this year!
Do you have an edible garden? What are your must haves in it?
KALE! Last year we tried chard and kale…the chard was a goner, but the chickens left the kale alone. Long live kale!
I can't even eat tomatoes off season. Not when you grow your own and you know how they are supposed to taste! My favs are black krums! What the fav at your house? I have my seed started and think I can get them in early this year!
My little lettuce and cauliflower sprouts are growing crazy fast right now!
We do lots of tomatoes and peppers for salsa. Jalapenos are a must, as well as purple tomato varieties. We also do well with tomatillos and eggplants here, too.

we by small little starter plants. we have never done the seed route yet!
i will have to ask ben where he gets the seeds. he is in charge of all of that!
Do you ever buy tomatoes from the Fullerton Arboretum? They just had their Monster Tomato Sale this past weekend. I bought several last year and they did very well. The only thing is that it's pretty chaotic going there and not cheap ($3 per small plant). This year we went to Fullerton College Horticulture Tomato Sale. It's a smaller sale, much more manageable and plants were $2.50 each. Still hundreds of varieties and I got some fun ones this year like Pink Accordian and Red Zebra. Can't wait til harvest time!

Your garden edible garden is just lovely! We are starting to grow one this year as well. We'll see how our grows though, we don't have a green thumb.
Hmm I don't have a garden yet, but my must haves would definitely be: green peppers, any kind of hot peppers, tomatoes and berries!
we have two huge gardens. one for just pumpkins and winter squash and the other one has all of our other veggies. i cannot wait for planting time!! nothing better then fresh veggies!
those tomatoes look delicious! I don't think I've ever told you this, but I read your blog almost religiously, after finding it when I was looking for a recipe for funky cupcakes (lo and behold cupcakes in a jar!), and it is so sweet! inspiring! my fiance loves gardening and talks about having a little garden in our future home. i told him i'd test out the fruit or veggies for him while he gardens for us. hehe.

this will be the first year in about the last 10 that we won't have a full garden. we just started an overhaul on the backyard and I'm not sure if we will be done on time to start a garden. i will at least have to have a few potted plants in the front yard, right?

I love to garden. My favorite/must have is tomatoes too. I plant them from seed, and this year I have ten different kinds. It's not 35 but its a lot for me. I also plant two varieties of beets, two varieties of radishes, two types of carrots, five different lettuces, three beans, and much more. But yeah heirloom tomatoes are the best. Have you read Tomatoland? It will change how you think about grocery-store tomatoes…
I love strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, sweetcorn, cucumber, beetroot and tomatoes, but my very favourite thing to eat from the garden is peas, picked straight from the pod and eaten immediately, delicious!
definitely must have tomatoes and peppers. since we grow in pots, we usually only have 2-3 varieties each, but the rest we can find at the farmers' market 🙂
I am attempting to grow my first batch of tomatoes…in a cold flat in England! Yeah, wish me luck with that! I don't have any useable outside space (not even a windowsill!) so I have to make do with indoor pots. I bought some fresh basil and coriander plants recently, too, and I'm desperately trying to keep them alive as I have a terrible track record with growing herbs! Oh, for a garden and a little but of sunshine!

I love your blog, and your real life opinions on life as a Mom. Your weekly recipe plans are fantastic, and now your garden.. hooray, how wonderful! My husband and I just started chronicling our kitchen and garden successes and failures at kitchendirt.com This year we'll be doing tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, radishes, carrots, lettuces and spinach, kale, swiss chard, peas, potatoes (HIGHLY recommended to anyone with kids.. my kiddos think it is a treasure hunt at the end of the season when they get to dig up all the potatoes) onions, and a bunch of odds and ends. I can't wait to hear more about your garden and what varieties Ben ended up purchasing. Keep us updated!
