a pho-n dinner

August 3, 2011

One of the things we like to eat when we go out to eat is Vietnamese Pho. It is also one of the things we have been wanting to try to make ourselves, but never attempted, until now.
We were going to make it during our homecation, but we had already made an over abundance of dishes that we decided to save it for another night. We used this recipe and the prepping for making the broth must be done 24 hours ahead of time, so you must plan for that, but overall, we were happy with the flavor of the recipe. It does taste different from the Pho we get at restaurants, but I think ours was pretty darn good considering ours did not contain any msg. The only thing drawback is that it cost more money to make at home than eat out because 4.5 lbs of oxtails is kind of expensive.

It was a hit amidst the girls, but we mixed their rice noodles in with some soba noodles and once we gave them a squeeze of that hoisin sauce, they went to town! Looking at the pictures and remembering it is making me crave some right now. That’s what happens when you are pregnant and writing a food post.
Any else love Pho or have any experience cooking this dish at home?

My father loves Vietnam pho!! I used to love it but they have too muuch MSG…get me too thirsty. Everytime I visit my parents we always go to Vietnam restaurant even though they sick of it but because NJ doesn't have it the way how Manhattan serves it they tag along.

We made the Vietnam spring roll (Gỏi cuốn, summer roll) with lots of peanut sauce…(mmmm) and the cha gio (crispy roll).

I love pho, but I've never attempted to make it myself. It's always a fun outing filled with delicious food and lots of pho jokes 🙂

I love Pho but have never made it. Mostly because my grandma makes it for me. 😉 I guess one day I will have to learn but for now, I'll enjoy hers.

  • Hiya!

You can substitute as much as half of the oxtail for beef shank or other beef bones for the stock. That will make it a little more affordable.

It doesn't hurt to make friends with a butcher too, he or she can hook you up with other “throw away” parts that are awesome for stock making.

  • I made a vegetarian pho years ago with tofu and it was really good found the recipe by searching online)! But a little time consuming for something my kids don't like so I haven't made it again.

  • Being the picky eater I am, I totally don't like pho! Everyone I know loves it though.. maybe I just haven't had any good pho. But I like that you made it yourself, I'm sure yours is very good! 🙂

My husband loves pho, so I've been to just about every Vietnamese restaurant in town. Being the super picky eater that I am, I haven't tried it yet…but maybe when I have one of my brave “try new things” days I might.

Thanks for sharing where you got the recipe, because he's been looking for one to make at home some time!

  • That DOES look delicious…and I love me some pho!
I have been dying to find a vegetarian friendly pho recipe to make at home. If you come across one in your endeavors, please let me know! 🙂

yum. We don't have any great Pho places near us, so I may have to collect some ingredients next time I'm down in LA and try this myself. The girls do love just about any kind of noodles.

I can not get enough pho. We have so many mom and pop places in our area, I love supporting local business! I've been craving pho soup EVEN in 109 degree weather. Thanks for the recipe I definitely plan on making my own sometime :))

oh I loooove pho! but my girls have never had it, we always order them grilled lemon grass chicken.

I get my pho with rare beef slices and lots of beef balls! haha.

your photos are so pretty too!

  • I LOVE pho! I've been tempted to make it home. Now that I have a link for a good broth I'll have to try it out! My husband loves it too so it'll be a nice surprise for him. 🙂

  • i LOVE pho! my brother (i almost typed “bother”, haha) love to go get pho together…there's very good pho in dc!

Oh yes! I loooooove some Pho. I'm not Vietnamese myself, but my family has cooked the dish for years before I actually had any from a restaurant. We usually use big bones from the cow versus ox tails, but that still sounds good. Pho is one of my FAVORTIE dishes! So glad your girls love them. Have you tried Sriracha in yours yet? It's delicious.

I craved Pho when I was pregnant. My sis would bring me some from the local Chinatown. It was the best. They sell Pho spice packets ready to go in our supermarkets now so I just add water and beef. You could prob substitute even for lean chicken. I have converted my hubby and he loves it along with rice paper rolls at home. If you want I can mail you some packets as I'm not making it much these days.

Gorgeous pix! Craving Pho 79 in Alhambra now (even though I'm not pregnant).
    : )

  • Tang says:

Yummmm I love love love pho! My mom makes it with a giant bone of some part of beef and boils it all day long for the soup! It's delicious! She also adds onion and some sort of dried star-looking spice. She taught me how to make it, but I forgot already!

  • sue.min says:

I make it all the time! So easy peasy, but I usually have to be in the mood for it.

    WE LOVE PHO!

we're originally from San Diego, currently living in Fresno. if you are ever in SD (specifically Chula Vista) go to Pho Hiep Grill on telegraph canyon road. it's our fav.

no fav in Fresno yet. still looking. and craving.

    ugh.

  • mobygreen says:

We love making pho at home too and yes, it takes forever!! Totally, worth it though since we can customize it and eliminate the dreaded MSG. Here's a tip: My husband substitutes MSG with a little sugar (brown, raw, whatever you prefer). It gives it the pinch of sweetness that the MSG gives to food without the harmful effects. Love your posts and your photos as always!!!
