Turkey Burgers and Sweet Potato Fries. No major home cooked meals this week. This is using some frozen turkey patty we had and the closest I got to cooking was grilling onions and making sweet potato fries. This week was mostly filled with leftovers and we took Ben’s mom out to eat at one of our favorite spots. I was going to make white bean chili for Dinner Club, but realized too late that I didn’t have any beans on hand, so turkey burgers was served instead.
Week of 6/9 – 6/13

Our tomatoes are growing more and more each week, I can’t wait to have a menu filled with tomato-y things!
This is a happy corner in my craft space. The rest are really messy corners!
This week’s learned, links, and thankfulness…
Thankful for all those who came and supported last Saturday! I had so much fun meeting and hugging all of you! You can see a couple posts (done by friends/guests) about the book launch party here and here.
If you wear a medium-large in a swimsuits, you really ought to check this vintage one out! It’s so lovely and such a good price too!
A new app came on scene this week put out by Oh Joy & Taza. I signed up for Pippit (look for me under @cakies) because I’m always the last to sign up for everything and Cakies always ends up taken, so I signed up for this one early (and to be able to see what it’s all about). So far I’m feeling it was two bucks not well spent, since after my exploring, it’s a bit confusing and it just seems like a glorified pinterest-instagram app. Maybe I haven’t spent much time there yet, but from what I saw so far, I don’t think it’s an app that makes life easier, in fact it’s just another one that sucks the life out of living life. That’s just my observation of course. I guess the bonus is you get to link up to products, therefore from a business standpoint I see how it would be beneficial, but from a living life standpoint, it’s just another techie thing to busy ourselves with. I’ve only spent about a total of 5 minutes on there though, so maybe I haven’t explored it enough. What do you guys think so far? If there’s something great about it that I’m not seeing please enlighten me!
Don’t mind the lighter posting this week. I think I felt the rat race blogging can be sometimes, so I took some breaks. I think that new app made me feel it even more, and while I love social media and thankful for everything that has come from it, sometimes it can be a bit suffocating too. I just needed a breather.
We’re running out of garden space, so we’re using containers to continue growing more fruits and vegetables. We purchased 4 large zinc pail planters, Ben drilled several holes in the bottom, and we potted some sweet and hot peppers. We also had some empty metal containers (that once held strawberries) just sitting there unused, so we added new soil and planted more sweet peppers in those.
We use about 7-8 habaneros in our meal every Friday night, so I’m excited to be able to grow them in our garden instead of buying them at the grocery store. Peppers are on the “dirty dozen” list of high pesticide-filled fruits/veggies (see full list here), so it’s one of the top things we want to make sure and grow ourselves.
The spicy peppers we’re growing are serranos (1 in the ground and 1 in a container), ghost peppers, and habaneros (2 in the ground – 1 red and 1 mustard – and 1 mustard in the container). The sweet bell pepper plants we have are a red, orange, lilac, and pinot noir… sounds kind of fancy, doesn’t it?!
Have you heard of Hello Shiso? I love their super adorable hair goods! Obviously, since I started blogging to go along with my shop full of hair clips, I would have a soft spot for another mom who does the same. Mimi Tsang brings out the fun in accessorizing and along with her own lines of accessories, she has some other totally quirky hair things by other brands too (Soul would love this cat headband!). I totally love the modern feel the site has and the fun styling that’s going on, and those fruit hair clips totally hit a sweet spot for us! True would totally be about bead bow headband, Brave would love the tulip clips (because it’s red like Spider-Man), and Glow just loves animals so the kitty clips would be her fave. Which one would be your fave?
Don’t forget if you want to make one some rosy posy felt clips, I have instructions for them right here.
Supplies: Clothespin Paper Doll Template (best printed out on card stock)
Crayons
6 spring clothespins (I used 2 1/4″ clothespins)
Paint & paintbrush
Glue
Directions:
Color the paper dolls and cut out. Paint one side (or both sides) of the clothespins (2 per doll) and allow to dry completely. Glue the shoes onto the tip of the arm of the clothespin. Insert the doll into the pair of jaws on the clothespin, and there you have your clothespin paper doll.
It’s summer, well, not officially, but some kids are already out of school and ready to begin the summer fun. “Camp Home” will be a series of projects kids can do with things you might already have around the house (or won’t be that difficult to run out and get). My goal is to share a project a week and I will try my darnedest to stick to it throughout the summer. The girls and I made these on Friday, but they are already wanting to make more; I see a larger clothespin doll family in our future!
What are some of your go-to summer projects to do with kids?
Langostino Sopes. We still had some langostino leftover in the freezer, so for Memorial Day I made more sopes (made here for Mother’s Day). Usually Ben makes it, but this was the first time I did, so I will have the recipe to share with you soon. It really is one of my favorite recipes!
Week of 6/2 – 6/6
Monday: Black Bean Tacos
Tuesday: Seafood pasta
Wednesday: Leftovers
Thursday: Turkey Chili
Friday: Sushi
My mother-in-law is in town, so I made bossam again so she could try it. She loved it and made it a Korean-Mexican fusion by using chipotle sauce on top of hers! What have you been eating for dinner lately?
I have a large growing pile of fabric scraps. I refuse to throw them away because I am sure they can be used for something. I have been seeing different types of interesting necklaces made of buttons, beads, and fabric. Then, I figured why not make one out of my scraps...
I think it made my white shirt a little less boring. This was so quick and easy to make.
How to make a recycled scraps necklace (which is very similar to the straps on my braided tablecloth bag):
1. Take your scrap fabric, I cut a .5''-1'' snip and tear the rest of the fabric down for a nice frayed edge. Used 3 different fabrics for each strand.
2. Take 3 of the torn pieces and tie the ends together with a rubber band.
3. Braid the 3 pieces together and tie ends together with rubber band when done.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for more strands. Remember you can make the strands any length you want, if run out of fabric, just weave more into the braid.
5. Once all the strands you want are braided, gather one end of each strand together and straight stitch together with sewing machine. Repeat for the other ends of the strands. Snip off any excess.
6. Gather ends of the necklace and sew together (snip excess) or a ribbon can be sewn at the ends to be able to tie the necklace closed, but I just sewed both ends together.
7. Voila! A nice way to make use of all your lovely scraps.
Sorry if the directions get you a little lost, but it really is easy. I promise. Maybe I should put some in the shop. Please share any other good ideas you may have of things that can be made with scraps. I would love to hear (read) them!
