We went to a local farmer’s market a few weeks back and we came home with some goodies. Then, when Ben and I were in SF we made sure to go to the Ferry Building for their farmer’s market on Saturday morning and I think that was the mecca of farmer’s markets (maybe some of you would protest that based on your own experience). It was insane and intense all in a good way. A few days later, the election happened and the majority of California voted again Prop 37 regarding the labeling of genetically modified food , and it furthered more discussions in our home about how and where we get our food. We have talked about the CSA, but for where we live, we would have to pick up the box and it would be about an hour away drive (just one way), so it really wasn’t that convenient.
We mostly buy organic fruits and vegetables at the grocery store, but we wanted more options. Thus, Friday morning I told the girls to get dressed and we were heading out. We went to a farmer’s market at a local hospital, but when we got there, their options were sort of lame. There were 3 vendors selling fruits and veggies and only one of them offered organically grown goods. We all piled back in the van, and then headed to the farmer’s market we visited a few weeks back.
The girls were excited to go back to that one because they had the vendor who sold fresh pita bread and hummus and it was just about lunch time, so it was something we were all craving. We got our lunch, loaded up on some fruits and veggies and then made our way home. We’re going to try to make it a goal to go every Friday. The price for organic produce is reasonable and it’s another reason to get out of the house and get the girls involved in picking fruits and veggies.
I wore my clogs from Lotta from Stockholm and they seemed like the perfect farmer’s market uniform. Also, when going out with all four we get lots of little smiles, probably because people think I am crazy to have 4 kids (BTW- I think I’m crazy too!) and they’re always surprised to see another little one hiding in the back, bottom seat. To aid in going out and about, we use the Phil & Ted double stroller. It makes it so much easier to tote the 4 around; two sit and two walk. It’s great! We have been using it for about 5 years now and I can attest to it’s durability and ease of use. This is just some FYI for any of you needing a double stroller.
I’m curious, how do you shop for your fruits and veggies? Do you prefer organic or does it not matter? If you’ve tried out the CSA, what are your experiences with it?
I was so bummed (and shocked) that 37 didn’t pass. Bummer! We have several CSAs really close to our home and we did that for awhile. It was convenient, but you don’t get to pick what’s in your box, so we ended up having some things go bad. Now, we just buy the majority of our food from a local co-op. I highly recommend that because the majority of produce is from local farms, but you get the ease of buying what you want, when you want it from a grocery store. We also frequent our local farmer’s market for a few things that you can only buy there, but mostly for the experience.
you and your family are adorable. i love that you share about eating healthy and involving the girls in making healthy eating choices. where i live we have organic options available at the local grocery store, but it can be a little pricey. i have shopped at some farmers markets, but the organic options are limited. i haven’t been able to find a CSA that is convienient for us, and with only two adults and one little one in our home, buying in smaller quantities makes more sense for us. i love your stroller – i have a britax b-ready that turns into a double, and hope to use it as one someday! thanks for sharing these little family adventures – again you are all adorable!
Hey Ruby I get a CSA box delivered once a month. (farmfreshtoyou.com) I like it because I can customize it, like how often and what size box and even by fruit or veggies or mixed. Check it out 🙂 it seems to work for us and we have been doing it for over a year now. I have been able to change the frequency of delivery too! more in the summer and less in the winter.
Oh! I’ll check it out!
Love your clogs! I’ve been craving a pair, but I have trouble with the Lotta From Stockholm link working. Does anyone else have this problem or know how I can access the store or where I can find similar clogs?
You know I have the same problem with the link to their site when trying to get their from an ipad or iphone, but using my desktop it links up fine. It’s really strange. Are you using a tablet or phone? I would google Lotta from Stockholm and see if it takes you that way. Let me know how that works out!
Yay it worked! Not sure what the difference was, I used the same Mac, but I got my clogs ordered!
I buy organic whenever it’s possible, but I don’t get all paranoid about it. I try to buy the “dirty dozen” products always organic though. We thought about CSA, but it doesn’t make sense financially for only two people. A lot of fruits and veggies would go bad before we could use it!
Love those clogs! I love your outfit posts! You should do more updates on your favorite items of clothing/fave outfits. I’d love to see them!!
We used to live in LA and this makes me miss it so! Those persimmons! Here in Kansas, the farmer’s markets are closing for the season. So sad! We go to the same organic farmer every week ,and I love that we can chat and also buy some Amish goods he brings from his friends. I can’t find a co-op or local CSA through the winter, so I shop Whole Foods. Last winter I tried doortodoororganics, but was disappointed when the produce came from Mexico and other far away places. It can be so tough to decide what the right choice is when we have so many things to consider…like local, organic, fair trade, zero waste, gmo’s. It takes work, vigilence and awareness- sometimes it wears me out! 🙂
If you ever go back to SF you should go to the Fillmore Farmers market!
I forgot to mention that my family is all about organic foods!I am also bummed out that Prop 37 didn’t pass because other people do need to know about what is in our food so I think we should have labled the foods to let them know if it is GMO or what not.Anyway have a great day Cakies!
http://www.farmfreshtoyou.com – it’s amazing! and any member can get you a $10 off coupon code on your first order, let me know if you need one!
i was also going to rec farmfreshtoyou. it’s a good substitute if you can’t get a regular csa locally. of course hitting up the weekly markets is a great outing!
