polaroid tuesday: week forty-four

November 3, 2009

I had breakfast served to me in bed and I got this new little toy.

week forty-four

I love my family and I love birthdays!
And because I love presents, I am not afraid to deny it, I want to giveaway a present to one of you!
I am giving away a polaroid camera for you to use and in case you haven’t heard, film will be reproduced again next year (or can buy some here right now). Just leave a comment suggesting what I should crave for my birthday dinner tonight. I am so stuck. My appetite has been wonky and frankly, I don’t know what to eat. Every day and every meal is a challenge for me. I would be happy not eating, but I know that just isn’t possible as I have to feed a little one. Plus, I am hungry, just nothing sounds good.
If for some reason, you chance upon this post after my birthday, please still make suggestions on something to eat. I always need ideas as Ben is running out. I will announce the winner on Friday morning (those across the oceans are welcome to join too!).
Good luck and happy unbirthday to you!!!

    Happy birthday! 🙂

I'm currently loving a TON of The Pioneer Woman's recipes, my favorite being the artichoke spaghetti! It's delish! Hope you have a lovely day and dinner!

  • Hmm, assuming that Hannah and Gretel are out of the question, how about a lovely sweet potato baked with a little butter and cinnamon on it.

My sister and I had them the other night with spinach salad and I felt like I was having dessert for dinner.

I hope you had a happy birthday girl and just think, next year you will have another smiling face to jump around on your bed!

Hope you and Ben and the girls have a fabulous first week of November.

  • k a t y says:

Hm. . I always make my mom cook southern food like gumbo or crawfish etouffee but if Sean was cooking I guess we would have some kind of pasta which is always good. Happy Birthday by the way! I also love gifts of all sizes!

  • ahhh Happy Birthday!
I have very little suggestions because I'm not a good cook at all and when I was pregnant last all I ate was yogurt and granola, pretty much every single day for 9 months!
I would so love a polaroid camera though!
I'm with the first commenter… CAKE!

  • Sharon says:

I love birthdays! Do crêpes sound good at all? I'm 5 mo. pregnant, and they are ALL I want. I like dessert crêpes (with fruit and whipped topping), but putting veggies and shredded chicken in them is really yummy too. I hope you feel better soon; it will be so nice to have a baby to cuddle with during the holidays!

  • jenniegirl73 says:

Happy Birtday! My fave (especially when preggers) was butternut squash ravioli with sage butter sauce and a field green salad with candied walnuts, craisins and mandarin oranges. Top it off with something decadent and chocolate of course…loving the Pioneer Woman Chocolate cake!

  • Terri says:

    Feliz Cumpleanos!!!!

Tonight I am making turkey meatballs with pasta and tomatoe sauce ala Tessa Kiros' Apple for Jam Cookbook (one of my favorites). Here's a link with a couple of recipes: http://www.andrewsmcmeel.com/apples-for-jam/index.html

    I hope you like!
Also Orangette has wonderful recipes on her site. One of my favorites is Every Day Cake YUM!!!!

Again, Happy Birthday! May you have a blessed day with your lovely family! God Bless you!!!!

  • reilly says:

Maybe checking out a blog completely different from what you usually would look at might give you some inspiration, like a vegan blog!

Last night I made a sandwich I hadn't made in a while, but I used to eat almost daily – cut thin (~1/4 inch) slices of potatoes, cook them in the microwave for 3-4 minutes, and throw them in a pan. Season with salt, pepper, and your seasoning mix of choice. Cook until both sides are golden brown.

Serve on bread with a little veganaise (or regular mayonnaise) or as a side dish.

  • Allison Drew says:

Right now, I'm personaly craving black bean burgers. That might be a good birthday dinner. Ooooh, or greek food. Yum.

  • boots says:

another year better- i think you should have what i want for dinner too – butternut squash ravioli. yumyum!!!! happy birthday my dear.

  • Jenn Kirk says:

Happy birthday! Dinner should definitely be some type of fall comfort food. Spaghetti squash w/ jalapeno cream, or butternut squash ravioli, or just a grilled sandwich (basil, minced garlic, mozzarella, tomato, hint of mustard, all on sourdough) with a bowl of tomato soup.

  • Karin says:

When I am having difficulties with eating, while I should really eat, I make soup. Warm, delicious soup. Sometimes with lots of vegetables and chicken, sometimes only a light bouillon. Whatever the ingredients, soup almost always works as a pick-me-up.

    Happy birthday!

  • khardersen says:

Thai lettuce wraps (a la The Cheesecake Factory) would hit the spot right about now. Satay chicken, carrots, coconut curry noodles, bean sprouts – yum!

    Happy Birthday!
    Karla

  • autumn says:

Oh my! It would be my first polaroid camera and would be just in time to snap pictures of my first baby (due dec. 5!).
I am 35 weeks along and would choose vegtable soup with goat cheese dumplings baked on top….yes indeed!
Or greasy mexican food- like enchiladas and rice and beans…and a mojito (you know, or not!)

    Happy Birthday Dinner!

  • heather. says:

chicken noodle soup with a really great piece of bread. tons of noodles and parsnip, dill, carrots! so delicious and so very good for you and baby.

    fingers crossed for that camera…

  • Lisette says:

homemade chicken pot pie. warm, yummy and delightfully healthy.

  • Veggie pot pie, mashed potatoes, arugula salad, corn on the cob, and a slice of hummingbird cake.

  • Kim says:

When I am preggo…all I can get myself to eat is cereal…cereal and more cereal! I would treat myself to the most expensive kind…good thing the healthy ones were what I craved!!! So I suggest cereal…But I have also been on a butternut squash kick…just steamed and eaten just like that. My husband wouln't touch the stuff…he thinks I am weird!
OOOHH…also homemade chicken noodle soup! man, I might need to make that for dinner…also…I would LOVE nothing more than my very own polaroid!!! Hope I win!

  • Megan says:

    Happy birthday!

I suggest pancakes in some sort of a cute shape (panda?) for your birthday dinner 'cause you can stick candles in them!!!

  • Sara says:

    are you going out?
    or staying in?

I would go plain and simple…

    creamy tomato soup with croutons
    grilled cheese on sourdough
    side of pickles

    and cake. of course.

    Happy Birthday, friend!

  • Carlita says:

lasagna! with delicious french bread and salad. it's so simple, but always a good pick!

    happy happy birthday!
(and the story you did with your family was so cute! loved the trees on the chalkboard wall!)

  • kristi says:

happy birthday! i would pick either (a) cinnamon buns because you DO have a bun in the oven; or (b) chicken pot pie, because that is just what comes to mind when i think of the most comforting food ever in the whole universe.

i hope regardless of what you eat you have a wonderful amazing rest of the day!

  • Sarah says:

    Ruby,
I know that you and your family love to eat fresh healthy things, especially out of your lovely new veggie garden. Here are a couple of suggestions along those lines: Swiss Chard and Rigatoni, and a yummy appetizer of Roasted Butternut Squash Soup. I found these recipes recently on another lovely blog, here: http://saipua.blogspot.com/2009/11/return-to-socilizing-and-cooking.html.
I hope you have an absolutely wonderful birthday!
    –Sarah

  • Andria says:

How about my all-time favorite comfort food… roasted veggies with a little saffron and some golden raisins, over couscous? You couldn't resist it if you tried…

And you'll need a little protein. Hmm…cashews on top?

Whatever you eat, I hope it makes your birthday happy! You are lucky to have TWO great cooks in your house! 😉

  • Mary says:

Happy birthday! Grilled cheese and tomato soup is what I'm craving tonight.

Happy Birthday! If I were you I would pull some veggies from your garden and cook them up with some tofu (or chicken.. I'm a vegetarian) and rice… maybe make skewers… yum!

  • thetinybean says:

    Happy Birthday to you!
When I am feeling icky, I like to eat pastene (it's a tiny round pasta, like couscous) with butter and parmesan cheese. Maybe some peas thrown in if I'm feeling adventurous. And there is always cinnamon sugar on toast! I hope that whatever you decide on, that it tastes good!

  • Shiriously says:

How about some bbq chicken with mashed potatoes and corn… And my preggo sister is craving nothing but apples lately, so maybe a baked apple with cinnamon and brown sugar for dessert?

    Happy birthday!

  • Stephanie says:

Happy Birthday!! I hope you find something to eat! I suggest some homemade chicken noodle soup, maybe with some homemade bread. Does your husband make that??
Hope you find something to eat!! and that you enjoy it!
    -Stephanie C

  • well last night i had sugar coated frog legs for dinner and tonight i am going to have caramelized rabbit tail. i prefer that you eat pork blood defried.

    love you sister
happy birthday i love you 🙂

  • Tamale Cakes from Cheesecake factory! They are sooooo gooood 🙂

  • Susan says:

My famous beet salad (at least in my house, ha ha):

goat cheese crumbled up, arugula leaves (or spinach – whichever looks fresher and is cheapest at the time of purchase), walnuts (or pecans, whichever you have), beets of course! (canned or cooked, then diced up into big bite sized pieces), blueberries, a pear diced up, topped with a pomegranate dressing (VONS sells a great one through their Eating Right brand called pomegranate blueberry dressing/marinade – YUM!!!)…

Oh, man… Now I need to go to the store!

If you don't like this idea – sushi (and a little teriyaki) and frozen yogurt always seems to work for you :O)

    Love you! Happy birthday!

    Love, Susan

  • Hi Ruby!

Happy Birthday!! When ever I am in a food funk, I go to my all time favorite, a plain salad covered in beans and red cabbage. Sort of sets the palate back to normal!

Oh and home made muffins or cornbread! That's always good!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
For my birthday last month we had chocolate cake and bbq sausages, onions and mushrooms with fresh bread YUM.

I would really love to try ham, pear and blue cheese pizza but like you I am restricted by pregnancy….

So maybe lasagne always a winner here.

But then again some more of those bbq mushies might be on the cards for us tonight. YUM

  • jah says:

    Happy Birthday!

Well, if you are going out, then I highly suggest KOREAN food! Yum yum! Not only do you get your main dish, but you'll also have all of the little side (panchan) dishes too… with all the different options, I'm sure your cravings will be met. My favorite (main) dish is Kim-Chi Tofu Soup… (droool…)

And if you're going to stay in, I always think breakfast for dinner is great: Pancakes, vegetable egg omelettes, turkey bacon, waffles, yogurt, fruit, toast.. You don't have to eat/make them all, but the possibilities are endless! Also, breakfast for dinner will tie in nicely with your family's tradition of breakfast in bed.

    Happy Birthday Again! =)

  • jeanlee says:

macaroni and cheese in any shape or form 🙂

  • Natalie says:

    Happy Birthday Ellen!

how about breakfast for dinner? omelettes, toast? or pancakes? i don't do that very often but when i get in ruts sometimes thats what we all crave anyways. i am pregnant too and struggling the same way with cooking. anyways have a lovely day!!!!

  • Stacy says:

first of all a very happy birthday to you! one of the meals we have frequently because it is so good and easy to make is greek pitas – just saute up chicken (or steak), green and red peppers, and onions and put it over a greek pita smeared with hummus then top it off with feta cheese. it's delicious!

  • carly. says:

    happiest of birthdays m'dear..

there are sososo many yummy foods! do you like seafood? i crave seafood all the time. lobster, calamari, the whole shi-bang! or what about some good old nachos and cheese? i love having a whole bunch of appetizers as dinner sometimes…

or cake! dessert for dinner, hey why not! it's your birthday!

  • I'm craving something spicy, like Thai or Indian food. I hate it when I'm hungry but nothing sounds good… Hopefully you'll get your cravings back soon. 🙂

Oh! and have a happy birthday!

  • taylor. says:

i've had recent cravings for coconut shrimp and i have not been able to have any recently! i know that you and your family are very health conscious so i don't know how well that would mesh, but it is always very tasty and then you could satisfy the craving for the both of us!

  • kristina says:

this might sound odd, but i'm pretty much going to leave you a whole recipe in this comment… this lovely dish is fondly referred to as wheat thin chicken.

In a bowl, mix together crushed wheat thins (or any semi-salty cracker) and finely chopped pecans…about 2 cups of each. In a separate bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons each of soy sauce and honey. Clean, salt, and pepper chicken breasts (or cut them into smaller, more nugget-like pieces – better for little hands to manage!), coat in the soy sauce/honey mixture, then roll in the cracker/pecan mixture. Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes and…

voila! a little salty, a little sweet, cheap and relatively healthy! Goes fantastically with mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes!

  • Kate says:

Happy Birthday!!! How about a spinach salad with pomegranate seeds and chocolate cake with pumpkin ice cream – have you ever had pumpkin ice cream because it is to.die.for. I hope your appetite returns in a hearty way!

  • lina says:

happy birthday!! wooo hooo!! i love birthdays.
    i suggest hummus & pita : )

  • Jara says:

Thanks so much for the chance to win this awesome prize! If I were you I would eat comfort food – mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, etc. I know you are rather healthy so organic options would be best I'm sure:) Good luck, sometimes we just don't want to think about what to eat – I understand – sometimes I just don't have the energy to think about it:)

  • happy birthday! thanks for doing this give away… let's see if i get lucky… 🙂

when i was pregnant, i craved anything noodles. italian, korean, chinese… if it was noodles, it went down ok. i don't know how you keep up your shop and blog while your pregnant with two princesses to take care of… when i was preggers, i was so exhausted and nauseous that i was out of commission.

    you rock!!!!

  • Sarah Nicole says:

Baked ziti. It is one of my new favorites. I hope you find something amazing to eat and have had a very Happy Birthday!

  • When I was pregnant with my daughter I ate long john silver fish. Not normaly something I eat, or will ever eat again. With my son, I ate toast and learned to make great guac.

  • Jenna says:

I second the “just cake” idea!

Maybe something fishy since you're so close to the sea.

  • 13mimosa says:

Not sure if you have any summer basil left in your garden? If you do, a little homemade pesto is the start. Pan fry or grill a chicken breast (or thigh) depending on your preference. Blanch some trimmed green beans and asparagus. Shell and cook some fresh peas. Mix all the veg and the sliced chicken in with the pesto. Lay some washed rocket (arugula) on a plate (dressed lightly with oil and vinegar if you like) then pile the pesto mix on top!

    Happy Birthday!

  • RachelDenbow says:

Happy, Happy Birthday to you! I'm glad you were able to enjoy it with your family and that camera looks like a LOT of fun!

No good food ideas here. Food feels pretty boring to me these days. Unless you're talking potato soup. I'm all about potato soup.

I'm not sure this Ruby is going to make it out for your birthday but she sends her love!

  • Rileigh says:

I would say pancakes. I could Always eat them when I am pregnant. Oooh maybe carrot cake pancakes, yeah… maybe that is what I'll have for dinner tonight! Happy Birthday!

  • Prue says:

Considering it's your birthday, fairy bread. I believe this is not so well known outside Australia so I will explain: a slice of bread, spread with butter or margarine, sprinkled with hundreds and thousands. Party fare across Australia. Happy birthday!

  • Mama Llama says:

I can't wait to see what you create with the new camera.

I don't know what to suggest for dinner, though. I haven't had much of an appetite lately, either. I think it's just the time of year. I get so spoiled by all the fresh produce all summer long, and when autumn comes I think my tastebuds go through a period of mourning.

Maybe some macaroni and cheese with butternut squash? If I can find the recipe, I'll post a link.

  • Becci says:

  • sgilmore says:

  • Leslie says:

A pumpkin smoothie is my favorite crave right now. Some yogurt, ice cubes, soy milk, pumpkin pie base and a dab of vanilla. Whip cream optional. Fairly healthy, creamy, cool, and just plain yummy.

  • Angela says:

I'm craving baked potato soup right now. Yummy 🙂

  • Karen says:

I craaaved mexican food all through my pregnancy, and for most of it, it was all I could keep down. Just thinking of it, I can feel the hunger for spicy hot beans and cool, creamy avocado. Sometimes, just the avocado, full of good fats for baby.
Or perhaps you could crave pesto chicken (take chicken breasts, slice a pocket, stuff with pesto and a large dollop of ricotta, close with toothpick, sprinkle with lemon, salt and pepper, and grill for ten minutes on both sides). Yum.
Thanks for the giveaway and happy unbirthday every day!

We made an amazing and easy salad last night. Baby spinach, pears, feta, and candied pecans. The pecans were just roasted in a pan with a little butter and brown sugar. So easy. So good. We had it without dressing but a light vinaigrette would be nice too.

Happy Birthday. When I was pregnant with my boys nothing hit the spot better than fetuccini alfredo. And now they both LOVE pasta… coincidence?
Also, I love your handicrafts. They are very inspiring. I think I may have to try to recreate your adorable Ballerina True.

  • Filipino favorites of mine…some lumpia or yummy soft, sweet, and creamy ensaimada!

    Hi!
I craved everything dairy the last few weeks of my pregnancy- and i've heard that Vit D in milk is what the baby needs at that time so I suggest you eat some of your favorite ice cream flavor. Blessings to you and your growing family!

Happy Birthday! Pregnant and a birthday? I'd suggest a big slice of red velvet cake, or better yet an ice cream cake, with a tall glass of milk.
