The Seven Year Itch by Rubyellen Bratcher

Scratchy, itchy, I’m starting to twitch,
I think my dear Ben, we’ve hit the seven year itch.

Boring, tiring, monotony filled,
I do all your laundry, it’s time to send you a bill.

Long, endless, the days blend together,
I want to float away like a teeny white feather.

Same ‘ole, same ‘ole, again and again,
I feel ruffled and bothered just like old mother hen.

Crazy, messy, a lot of insane.
I try to keep my head above water is the name of this game.

Yelling, fighting, your offspring they do,
I play referee but they gang on me two by two.

But who am I kidding, I love this neurotic life,
I am in for the long haul, it’s fun to be your wife.

Boring, tiring, monotony filled,
I know what to expect and that gives me a thrill.

Long, endless, the days blend together,
I would slow it all down from now until forever.

Same ‘ole, same ‘ole, again and again,
I love waking up to you handsome Ben.

Crazy, messy, a lot of insane.
I love you so dearly, my love can’t be tamed.

Yelling, fighting, your offspring they do,
I love your minis, Glow, Soul, Brave and True.

Scratchy, itchy, I’m starting to twitch.
I only want you to scratch this seven year itch.

We celebrated 7 years of being married this past Monday. It was a good anniversary. It was the most low key one yet. We had originally planned to send the girls off to my parents’ for the weekend, but we ended up keeping them all weekend long. All I wanted to do was clean and keep cleaning the house, and that is exactly what we did! It seems like a lame way to spend an anniversary, but I was quite happy cleaning all day long. All I really wanted to do anyways was be with Ben and relax, and though it wasn’t relaxing, I can’t really relax in a messy house anyways.

Monday morning, we did our little gift exchange and then we kept on cleaning. For dinner, we put the kids to bed early, then picked up sushi from our favorite place, and had a sweet little date in our bedroom with dinner and a movie. Simple and sweet. We may try to go out on Saturday just the two of us to celebrate, but with this cleaning kick we both are on, I wouldn’t be surprised if we forfeit that and stay home and keep cleaning. We’re lame, aren’t we?! If we are, at least we both don’t mind being lame together.

I had no anniversary present request and neither did he. We both ended up surprising each other with something handmade. I did a spin on the “seven year itch” and made a Shel Silverstein inspired poem for him accompanied with a drawing and cover page I did in ink and then digitalized. He loved it, but was feeling bad after reading the poem because he said he needs to give me more breaks. I thought that was pretty funny because I didn’t mean to make him feel bad, but was just trying to do mimic the sarcasm that Shel Silverstein emits in his poems. At the same time, I think the poem does emphasize what married life with kids is really like. It’s not always magical and there is a lot of work, but in the end, I love this life that I have been given a chance to live, frustrating moments and all!

Ben’s present has a bit of a backstory with it…  when he asked me to be his girlfriend he made me this book entitled 1,000 Things I Absolutely and Positively Love About You. When we were dating, he would randomly leave me notes of what he loved about me to put in the book and I think he got to number 11 and then life happened and the notes stopped. On occasion, I would joke with him that he still only loves 11 things about me. Well, he gave that book idea a makeover and found a vintage journal online that he wanted to use for it, contacted this lady to calligraphy the title, and started again with #1: How patient you are with me. Actually this project took him a year, apparently it was supposed to be last year’s anniversary present, but it took him a year to find the perfect journal to use and this 1911 french registrar book is the perfect thing! I am in love with the book, but so much more with the gift giver.

Ben and I laugh about how we spent our anniversary just cleaning, but really, for me, it was perfect.

I WANT TO BE FANCY

April 4, 2012

alice is legitalice is legit
This past Saturday, I spent a few hours under the guidance of a totally legit teacher learning a bit more of how to get fancy on photoshop! I know the bare basics, but just wanted to learn how to do more things. My friend Alice is a graphic designer (she graduated from Art Center Pasadena) and she has got skills like you wouldn’t even believe! Every time she taught me how to do something, I was like, “Oh. My. Gosh. You are fabulous!” Really, no joke. I was saying that because she really is and answered most of my life’s mysteries about that computer program.
Now, I still need to practice a whole lot to make it second nature to me, but I feel a bit fancier now. I have told Ben recently, if I had to redo my college education, I think I would have loved becoming a graphic designer. I think doodling and creating things on the computer is kind of fun, so I think I would have enjoyed that profession.
When I was deciding what to study in college, it was between being an art major or child and adolescent development major. Well, the child development one won because as much as I loved working with kids, I think I was a little too chicken to “officially” study art and didn’t feel I was good enough. I didn’t explore other options too much and just stuck to something I already was familiar with which was teaching. I think had I known all the possible professions in the creative arena, I might have tried to pursue that more. I know God has a reason for everything, so everything up to today has been a result of His leading, but all this to say… don’t be chicken, think outside the box, just try it, and always be prepared to work hard no matter what you choose.
Anyhow, I went from me learning photoshop to decision making stuff. Sometimes I can get a bit off tangent. If you want to get a bit fancier on photoshop too, send my friend Alice an email. If you beg, she might just teach you too! Her email is walajoo(at)gmail(dot)com.

THESE DAYS

March 21, 2012

at homeat homeat home
Days go so fast. Between all the diaper changes, feeding, cleaning, schooling, and playing and then repeating those things again and again, it all goes really fast. I need to remind myself to take deep breaths and pray more. Definitely pray more.
Today, we went to the local library. Honestly, we haven’t been in a few years. The last time was when I used to go to story time when I just had two little babes named Brave and True. Those babes are now little girls and my new two babes are Soul and Glow. Good thing we have tons of books at home that keep us pretty occupied, but today reminded me how much I really do love libraries and I should make it a habit to take them once every two week. It will be a new goal.
Each little one picked out a book and I picked out two for myself. I love reading! I describe it as watching a movie in my mind. I love watching movies in my mind! Now, I just picked two random books in the new release section and really picked it based on the cover. Yes, I really judge a book by its cover! It looked simple and mysterious and I am all about mysteries. Seriously. Take those over romance any day! Just like I would rather watch a movie with explosions, car chases, and bad guys than a chick flick. I am kinda random that way.
Other random things about me… I loved Elvis when I was a kid and swore he was still alive somewhere, I am allergic to crayola crayons, and I slept in my parents room (along with my three other siblings) until I was 12 and all because I was afraid of the dark. No joke. My parents even put a mattress on the floor for us kids to sleep. They were total attachment parenting!
The only reason I started sleeping in my room was because I got in a big fight with my mom and didn’t want to see her. After that, I kinda liked it and I guess I wasn’t as scared anymore and so I just stayed in my room.
Today will be another day that will zoom on by, but I looking forward to our quiet reading time because I have a couple of books to conquer. What books have you read lately? I want to add more to my reading list.

TUESDAY NIGHTS

October 12, 2011

Tuesday nights are becoming more special here because that’s the night we get together with some of our friends, particularly the BFF and her hubs and another gentleman from our church family, to share dinner and life. Dinner comes first and we all indulge, joke, and talk, after which the boys and girls separate and the boys have their accountability time together and Lin and I do our own version talking about things we struggle with, how to love God more, how to love our husbands more, etc. Of course, all the kids get put to bed after dinner and sometimes Ben and the boys do it to give the men some practice since they aren’t yet fathers and other times the girls do it.
Speaking of putting the girls to bed, last night they were so cute because as I was taking all three big girls upstairs for bed, they said, “Mom, we have a show for our church family.” I hesitated because it was already past their bedtime, but then let them do it because they weren’t being shy and I wanted to take advantage of it. They had me call everyone to where the stairs are, and once they were all there, they proceeded to sing “So Long, Farewell” from Sound of music. It was the cutest thing!!! As stubborn as my kids are sometimes, they can be such heart melters too.
Ben and I are so blessed by this time and getting to know our friends more, though Lin and I are pretty much like sisters, but our husbands are quickly becoming better friends and we secretly think they want to be BFFs like us. Guess that is not so secret anymore. Anyways, we have all taken turns at making dinner and everytime the Parks bring dinner, it becomes a new favorite for Ben and he raves on and on after the food after company has gone home (and for days after too).
korean tacos
Last night was no exception. They brought Korean tacos and oh. my. gosh. So Yummerz! I was so hungry and loving it that I only took a picture of my plate pre-digging in and post-digging in. I didn’t even get a picture of anyone else or the entire spread that was on the table. I plowed through 5 tacos and Lin and I out ate the boys. Our tummies were telling us we were full, but we listened to our taste buds. I officially declare that they can be in charge of food every week!
korean tacos
The recipe they used was Korean Beef Tacos from here and you can be sure this will be going in our recipe staples and I have a feeling this may be our Friday night dinner and I want to try it with shrimp. We definitely love our Tuesday nights with delicious food, friends, and discussions that spur us love God more. So, Lin and John… what are you brining over tonight? Who said we can’t do it on Wednesdays too?!!

saturday date (with soul)

March 28, 2011

Friday night the big girls slept over at grammy’s and grumpy’s, so Soulie experienced being an only child for a bit. One of my closest friends is finally getting hitched, so Saturday we headed out to her engagement party, after which, we made a date of it by hanging out at the beach and doing some other fun things together (with Soulie in tow).
hipstamatichipstamatichipstamatichipstamatichipstamatichipstamatichipstamatichipstamatic
The baby belly looks huge there, but I think that picture is funnily deceiving. Though, it is getting larger daily no doubt.
It was nice to go out on a sort of date with my Benny. We haven’t gone an official date in a few months, so this was nice. Soulie was with us because my parents took the big girls to watch a musical, so Soulie couldn’t go with them, but let me tell you… one kid is so much easier than three out and about!
I know one is hard. I don’t knock that fact to some of you who are still in the one kid phase, but boy oh boy, life gets much more interesting with two, then three, and ask me about four in about six months! God is good in that he prepares you slowly with each time you add to your brood, but if you have twins and triplets the first time around. Well my friend, you are just in a whole other ball game! God definitely knows you could handle a whole lot then!!!
Back to our date. It was sweet, simple, and kind of spontaneous all rolled into one. We used to go on date nights weekly, but we would have to drive to my parents (30 minutes away) and leave the girls, pick them up, then drive back home. Sometimes that is kind of a hassle.
I think one thing that keeps us sane together is the fact they all go to bed pretty early, so that gives me and Ben quiet time, even though we don’t go on “dates”, we don’t feel like we are missing out on too much. Don’t get me wrong though, I think going on dates are still very important. That’s why yesterday was so very special because we just got to walk arm in arm, which is easier to do with one kid, and just kind of laugh and giggle at silly husband and wife jokes together.
Ben mentioned how he listened to part of this message, which was sent to us by our Pastor, and it really resonated with him. I just listened to it and I must say, it resonated with me too. Good practical truths. Marriage is definitely an investment where both parties need to be willing to throw in their all, but God is really the one that makes the difference. With God’s help, I like investing in my marriage with Ben.
So tell me, are you married? If so, for how long? If not, any engagement/wedding coming soon or are you still patiently waiting? Marriages are by no means easy and I am sure we could all learn a bit of wisdom from one another no matter how many years you have under your belt!

vintage here, vintage there: vintage shoes

February 8, 2011

vintage here, vintage there
Hi my name is Rubyellen Bratcher and I am a shoe-a-holic and this week Rachel and I are strutting our vintage shoes!
vintage here, vintage there
I really am addicted to shoes for me and my girls, but then again… what girl isn’t?!! Lucky for me is that I have three girls, so I know whatever I purchase doesn’t go to waste because it gets passed down from person to person. I really love that I am able to do that! True and Brave are also pretty much the same size so they share a lot of shoes too.
vintage here, vintage therevintage here, vintage there
I really only buy them each a pair of shoes twice a year (unless I find some at the thrift that I can’t pass up). We give them a pair of shoes for fall/winter for their fallebration present and another pair for spring/summer! Of course, sometimes something good does come up on etsy and I can’t pass it up, so I will get it and try to save it for a special occasion to give so that they aren’t just getting things willy nilly.
Actually, in my closet, I have a really big bag of presents, comprised of things that finally go on sale or if vintage, don’t want to miss out, and just keep them in bag for a special occasion. That is one of the reasons I am done with my Christmas shopping so early because I collect things all year long and save it for when it is present time. Even now that it is only February, I already have some gifts to give them for next Christmas. No joke. I am kinda crazy like that.
vintage here, vintage there
Funny story about their red cowboy boots is that they think they are Adora, Shera’s alter ego, when they are wearing it. They call it She-ra boots. The three strap mary janes are a recent buy from etsy that I couldn’t pass up the instant I saw it. They were just too perfect!
vintage here, vintage therevintage here, vintage there
One type of shoe I was really wanting this winter season were some cute boots. I have a plethora of vintage western/riding boots, but I didn’t have any cute regular ‘ole plain boots. I even ordered 4 different pairs from anthropologie hoping one would work, but nothing did and back to the store did all of them go.
vintage here, vintage there
on me: dress, american apparel. sweater tights, nordstrom rack. cardigan, thrifted. boots, c/o simple thrift.
on true: shirt, thrifted. skirt, misha lulu. shoes, etsy.
on brave: dress, vintage (gift from rachel). shoes, thrifted.
on soul: shirt, vintage. cardigan, vintage thrifted. skirt, forever21 baby. shoes, vintage.
Then Gwen of Simple Thrift, was so kind and offered me to pick something I loved from her shop and I came across these boots and fell in love instantly. When they came in, I loved them even more because it was really the softest leather ever and were so classic. Ben immediately said, “I love those more than any of the pairs you ordered from Anthro!” If something is a winner in Ben’s eyes, they are a winner in my eyes too! Thanks Gwen!!! They were classic and comfy, everything I wanted in a pair of boots. Oh and forgive the oddly cropped picture… that is what happens when you hand your 4 year old the camera and have her take a picture of you!
I don’t have too many vintage shoes, but here are some of the ones I have. The two left were thrifted (the only pairs I have ever found for myself at the thrift) and the bow one was bought at a vintage shop and the brown one was gifted from my parents for my birthday (I first blogged about them here).
vintage here, vintage there
The beige ones are slightly too narrow, so I may give them up and sell them (if I ever get around to that), but they are too pretty that I don’t know if I could bid them farewell.
True and Brave’s shoes are mostly from etsy, but the red boots were thrifted. All their shoes get a ton of wear and will keep being worn cause when True and Brave are done, Soul will have her turn with them.
vintage here, vintage there
My biggest shoe collection of all is vintage baby shoes. Soulie is quite the lucky gal! Though most of these have passed through True and Brave and now are on little Soul’s feetsies.
vintage here, vintage there
Aren’t these teeny things adorable? Only one pair is thrifted, a couple from flea markets, another couple were gifted, and the rest from etsy. Each pair is teeny and so cute. I love them all! But I do get sad when she outgrows one of them… eventually that will happen to all.
fave vintage shoes: if you are size 9 you must get these (seriously), basket weave maryjanes, pale pink oxfords, distressed boots, two toned oxfords, oxford spectators, maroon pixie.
Head over to Smile and Wave and see the steal of a deal boots that Rachel’s sportin’ or the super sweet gingham blouse Ruby is wearing! I will take that in my size please!
