a soft spot for lockets

October 11, 2012

locketslocketsI got my first locket when I was in kindergarten from my parents and ever since then I have always had a soft spot for them. Maybe it’s also the influence of my mom who was constantly buying unique lockets for herself because she wanted to have pictures of us with her all the time. She was always so proud.

Here I am today and I have a little collection going. I’m proud of my little family and love having pictures of them adorn my neck. I have 4 total and all of them are vintage. My favorite place to go locket shopping is Jean Jean Vintage. It’s pretty much my favorite vintage jewelry shop. She always has the best selection (look at this 1930’s cameo locket) and even Ben’s knows this shop well because he often checks it to see what lockets are in stock. This black 1940’s one is my newest addition from Jean Jean Vintage, which is the same place where I got my other locket pictured. Besides, locket this lovely shop has a bunch of other pretty vintage jewelry. I love the shop so much that I try not to check often because I know I will always find something that I love and will have a hard time saying no to (like this needlepoint clutch, this art deco brooch, and this 1940’s cameo). Told you the shop was dangerously wonderful!

Well, I finally put a teeny picture in my locket, which is the same one that I blew up and put on the wall (I just cropped out mine and Ben’s face). I love how simple and striking this locket is with the black stone.  I know I have my locket my parents gave me so long ago somewhere and it has a picture of my mom and dad in it. I just need to find it. I want to get each of the girls their very own locket, but I am waiting to find something special. Wouldn’t it be so cute if somehow we found 4 matching little vintage ones?!

Do you collect something now that you’re mom used to collect when you were younger?

we come in peaceDSC_7199 copywe come in peaceMy girls are so girly! They love tutus, tiaras, pink, dancing, and princesses. Even with all their girlishness, lately they have really been loving Transformers and Spider Man. In a homage to their growing love for the transforming characters, I transformed them into an alienbot. What’s an alienbot? Well, an alien and robot put together of course!

stripedstripedThis week they came home talking about volcanoes, earthquakes, and gemstones. I really love having this opportunity to send them to classes one day a week for enrichment.

Here’s a funny conversation I had with Brave the other day… Brave was sitting at the breakfast table staring into space, she was obviously in deep contemplation, so I was curious and asked, “Brave what are you thinking about?”

Brave replied, “I can’t decide if I want to be a ballerina or have a vintage (though when she says it is sounds like ben-tage) shop.” That’s my Bravey!

paper airplanes and longing for fall

September 30, 2012

us girlsus girlsus girlsus girlsSince Ben and I were sick, we missed gathering with our church family for two weeks and today we were so glad able to join them again! It was a beautiful day out, but much too warm for my taste. It’s over 100 degrees in our area. Oye! I guess Southern California didn’t get the memo that Autumn is here. It’s supposed to stay super hot for the next week and then cool down again next weekend. I can’t wait for Fall! Seriously.

Isn’t Bravey cute?! You gotta agree. Brave totally rocks those aviators! We’re at the point on Sunday mornings, I just yell, “Everybody get dress!” What they put on is pretty much what we leave the house in. So yup! Soul put on her embroidered Mexican dress tucked in her skirt. I tried to untuck it, but she wouldn’t let me. I choose my battles wisely.

How’s the weather where you’re at? Are you bundled up in sweaters? If so, I’m totally jealous. If Fall won’t come to us, we may just hop on a paper airplane and go to it. We’re talking plans to find Fall for my birthday… I’m so excited!

yippee!yippee!yippee! To anyone contemplating having (4) kids super close in age, let me tell you to get ready for a whole lot of yelling and lack of any peace and quiet in your house. There are never dull moments. You will never be bored again. The best thing is you get a whole lot of built in best friends. These two are always paired together and I am sure soon enough Soul and Glow will be pairing up. It’s a sweet bond they all have.

I am the oldest of 4 and my brother is 4 years younger than me, so we were never really in the same stage together. I was more the bossy older sister and he was the baby brother. Then my sisters came, but I was so much older than both of them that my 3 siblings have lots of memories running around playing together while I was on the phone talking to my friends. It’s a different experience than my kids get. As crazy as it is, I like my kids being super close in age.

True and Brave are having a pizza party fundraiser at school today. They have been reminding me all week to give them money for pizza. It’s so cute to see them so excited. I can’t wait to hear all about it!

Brave said, “I love going to real school!”

I said, “You want to go everyday?”

She said, “No. Just Tuesdays.”

Funny she says real school. It’s like we do pretend school at home or something. If it’s pretend, this pretending takes a lot of work and prep! Sheesh.

sunshine & rainbowsDSC_5337 copysunshine & rainbowsAnother day at school together, means another day to solidify being buds and more memories together. They always come home with the best stories and they tell me they are excited to go to school to share with their friends all that they are studying at home, especially what they are learning about Egypt. They love Egypt and now they know all about King Tut, but pictures of mummies scare them a bit. Heck! Mummies scare me a bit too. As much as homeschooling does present its challenges patience-wise, I do love this extra time I get to spend teaching my girls, especially when it is a subject they take joy in learning.

These girls of mine are delightful. Yes, sometimes they make me nutso (I think that’s normal), but overall, they really are sunshines & rainbows.
