Awhile back a friend gave me some of her husband clothes from South Africa and I’m finally getting around to using it, so I turned it into a pillow. I guess I’ve been on a pillow sewing thing of late, but it’s a quick way to scratch the I-want-to-sew-something-itch. I’m still stuck on the arrangement of pillows on our little bed turned couch, but this will do for now.
I’m thankful for the internet because there is always an overflow of good ideas. I love Rachel’s light solution and her amazingness of a rug. This tassel chandelier is so vibrant and I’d totally love to make a quilt like this, and this one just seems great for teaching faces and corners of shapes. What are some of your favorite ideas that are floating in the internet right now?
We’re on spring break this week… yippee! It really isn’t too different, since we homeschool, but at least it’s a bit more relaxed of a schedule, we can do some outings, and I can clean! The idea of cleaning sounds really fun right now. Am I boring or what? Maybe it’s because I know with cleaning comes decorating and I love rearranging things! So fun!
This week’s learned, link, and thankfulness…
I always mean to get this post up on Friday or Saturday, but once the weekend hits, I try not to be online. Plus we spent all of Saturday working in the backyard. I love working with Ben on the yard and having the girls just playing all around us.
Glow can say, “My shoes,” at least it sounded like it, and “Mommy!” a whole lot more these days. She tries to do everything her sisters do and as a result gets hurt a lot. I have a feeling that’s common with the baby in a family.
Ben went to a sleep disorder class and learned a lot of interesting things about sleep! He totally drew a sleep cycle chart for me on our bathroom mirror.
Thankful for my church family. We’re all a bunch of non-perfect people sharing life together and I’m thankful for the grace God pours out.
Excited I was able to do some slight furniture rearranging downstairs.
We will no doubt have some fun little adventures this week. I already have one planned for tomorrow with a friend. I’m excited!!! Spring break… we’re glad you’re finally here!
Spring Rolls with Spicy Peanut Sauce. This was for a swim night dinner and it was easy to already have prepped beforehand and when we came home, we all ate. The girls had theirs with hoisin sauce (and True’s had tofu in her rolls). We had a lot of left over veggies from the weekend and I just used those to put in our rolls, along with some greens from the garden. It was a yummy and quick dinner on a busy evening.
Crunchy Tacos. We use ground turkey and we like to indulge in crunchy shells. It’s just kind of yummy that way. For the record though, Ben eats his on whole wheat tortilla.
Quick Swiss Chard and White Beans Stew. Ben made this with our first chard harvest from our garden. He made two batches, one not spicy and one so spicy my nose was running. Despite, how heat packed it was, it was definitely delicious. I’m so excited to have chard back in full force in our garden.
Week 3/25- 3/29
Monday: Sandwiches
Tuesday: Crunchy Pork Kimchi
Wednesday: Leftovers
Thursday: Banh mi (anyone have any good recipes?)
Friday: Tuna Poke (never got to make it this week, so saving it for next)
I didn’t exactly follow last week’s meal plan, but I forgot to give Ben the grocery list for the week, so I went with whatever was already in our fridge. Still getting the hang of it with two swim nights during the week, so it takes sometime to get used to making meals for those nights. Do you have any quick meal suggestions for those nights?
I’ve had my fiddle fig leaf in this basket for awhile now, but wasn’t entirely feeling it. I wanted a white ceramic pot, but not sure if I’m totally feeling that either. Then as I was cleaning up last week, I saw this wire basket that hds just been sitting in the hallway (it used to be the girl’s laundry basket) and thought that might just do it. I sewed a large canvas bag of sorts to put the pot in (I also repotted my tree) and then put that in the wire basket. I definitely like this solution a lot better and it is working with something I already had. Now, that wicker basket is going to be put to some other use for sure. There are always plenty of uses for good baskets.
I’m pretty indecisive when it comes to plant containers, just as I am with pillows. I’m just not really good at coordinating them together. Are you an indoor plant person? If so, what containers do you like to use inside? I’d love some ideas!
I didn’t have any particular plans to celebrate this day, but True went to do an errand with Ben to a party store and she overheard the sales clerk telling Ben that tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and then her celebrating imagination ran wild! She came home jubilantly telling me that tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and how excited she was to celebrate it because she exclaimed, in these exact words, “I’m going to be rich!”
Oh my. She had these grand ideas that there was going to be some sort of pot of some sort of gold for her somewhere. Before bed, she even made sure to pick out her green outfit for church and encouraged her sisters to do the same. Well, this mama got in a little panic mode because I wasn’t going to do anything, but thankfully I remembered some pinterest ideas floating around that were easy and quick and that’s what I did. While they were sleeping, I taped up a little sign across their door, so they wouldn’t leave their room and wait for us. Then with an index card, I wrote a little note for each of them to follow the rainbow. The note was attached to a yarn leading them all the way to find their little bag of gold. The bag of gold was more like a couple quarters, dimes, and pennies, but I think it did the job. They were mighty giddy to have their bag of gold!
They even picked out a green dress for me to wear, but it didn’t quite fit, so green pants were the next best thing. I reminded Ben to make sure he put something green on too and we all had ourselves a green day. Ben and I are discovering that True loves holidays. Any kind of holiday! She just has a thing for celebrating and the fact that her birthday is next month is getting her celebrating spirit even more ready. Had we known that the kids were going to be this excited about St. Paddy’s Day, we would have planned a special meal with some green cabbage and potatoes. I guess next year this mama better be ready to give her kids a St. Paddy’s Day feast!
Do you do anything to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
on me: shirt, everlane. denim shirt, madewell. pants, urban outfitters. necklace, oh, hello friend. shoes, anthropologie. on the girls: soulie’s dress is misha lulu, the rest of the dresses are vintage, and target leggings for all. moccasins on soul and glow, c/o freshly picked.
I’m definitely a fan of Me & Mr. Cassidy. Nope. Not a blog, but the singing duo. I was a fan of Hope’s music long before we became friends, so I was a little star struck to meet her. I totally love their music! As evidence by using their songs here, here, and here. We like to mark special occasions and road trips with music so for our 6th anniversary, we listened to their first album all weekend long. Now, whenever we hear it, we’re transported to that time of celebrating for us. I’m very excited they have another album coming again soon because maybe we could use that for our 8th anniversary (or next road trip).
Their songs are folky, tell a great story, and are so much fun to sing and harmonize to. If you’re all about those things, you might just fall in love with them too. Oh and I’m no photographer, but just a gal who likes to tell pictures, so I was honored when they asked me to take some photographs of them which was used for their most recent EP release. I never thought I’d see one of my photographs on iTunes, so I think it’s pretty cool and used for such a great song (and duo) too!
Also, check out their first official music video… love this song!
check out their first album here… get their song on itunes here… me and mr. cassidy facebook page… me and mr. cassidy website…
I have a large growing pile of fabric scraps. I refuse to throw them away because I am sure they can be used for something. I have been seeing different types of interesting necklaces made of buttons, beads, and fabric. Then, I figured why not make one out of my scraps...
I think it made my white shirt a little less boring. This was so quick and easy to make.
How to make a recycled scraps necklace (which is very similar to the straps on my braided tablecloth bag):
1. Take your scrap fabric, I cut a .5''-1'' snip and tear the rest of the fabric down for a nice frayed edge. Used 3 different fabrics for each strand.
2. Take 3 of the torn pieces and tie the ends together with a rubber band.
3. Braid the 3 pieces together and tie ends together with rubber band when done.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for more strands. Remember you can make the strands any length you want, if run out of fabric, just weave more into the braid.
5. Once all the strands you want are braided, gather one end of each strand together and straight stitch together with sewing machine. Repeat for the other ends of the strands. Snip off any excess.
6. Gather ends of the necklace and sew together (snip excess) or a ribbon can be sewn at the ends to be able to tie the necklace closed, but I just sewed both ends together.
7. Voila! A nice way to make use of all your lovely scraps.
Sorry if the directions get you a little lost, but it really is easy. I promise. Maybe I should put some in the shop. Please share any other good ideas you may have of things that can be made with scraps. I would love to hear (read) them!
