jeans and espadrilles

May 10, 2017

I’m a shorty, so I like to wear shoes that give me a little height. These espadrilles give me a little oomph in height, but still comfortable. This is another pair of vintage jeans I found recently. It’s not as soft as this pair, but I guess I will have to make sure to take it on many adventures to make it nice and worn. You can’t really see the detailing here, but there’s zig zag stitching around the button fly that’s quite unique. It was way too long for me, so I gave it a raw hem. I’ve been living in this pair, my mom jeans, and my cream painter pants. They all play nice and take turns getting worn. Of course, my dresses must not be neglected either.

on me: linen top, vintage (similar here, and on sale!). jeans, vintage (lots of options here and here). espadrilles, castaner (similar here and here). straw bag, wovenfolk.

real life messes

May 9, 2017

Don’t look at the previous post and think my whole house is that neat because it certainly isn’t. Here is the proof. This is pretty much what the girls’ rooms look like most of the time. Currently, our guest room is in a state of disarray as it has been a catch all for furniture pieces I need to list on craigslist. I’m itching for the summer, so that I can start our big purge. I need to go through clothes that don’t fit and toys that don’t get played with. We also need to build a bookshelf somewhere because we have tons of books that need a place. With homeschooling and having girls that love to read, our book collection keeps growing, and we have no proper shelves to house them.

Soul and Glow are excited to deep clean their room because they want it to look like “Airbnb.” Soul has also requested to have a white duvet (it’s currently light pink) and I need to figure out how to decorate the rest of their room. True has the hardest time letting things go because she is super sentimental, which is probably more like Ben since he still has orange juice containers that I gave him when we were dating. I need to make sure he gets rid of some of that stuff this summer too. Also, I have two rooms downstairs that I never finished painting, so I’m going to attempt to get that done soon. Summer hasn’t even started and my to-do list is pretty long.

refresh with pillows

May 8, 2017

I don’t redecorate often, and my style doesn’t really change, so everything in our home stays pretty consistent. I only buy things I really love, so there’s never really a need to switch things out. It probably makes for bad blogger material, but whatever, I know what I like and that’s that. I’ve mentioned recently that I have been itching to redecorate a little, and the first thing on my agenda was to change out the pillows. I was going to order some from H&M (see this post), but after finding a stash of white, cotton canvas in my workroom, I got sewing and made the pillow covers myself. Then, I remembered I had a large collection of antique grain sacks and used a couple of those to cover two more pillows. The mix of textures go well together and I’m happy with our new pillow arrangement.

Over the weekend, I picked up a new pot at Home Goods  (it’s holding the plant on the coffee table). Also, I moved a couple of plants and decor items around, and while the changes aren’t major, it’s just enough to make things feel a little updated. I want to get a bigger plant for the corner, something about 8′ tall, and I’ll probably remove the hanging basket once I find the perfect plant. Ben thinks we might still need a couple light pink pillows for the sofa, so I may order one or two (or dye my own fabric), and see what that adds to the sofa. Other than that, I like the little changes we made and it’s just the beginning of a little bit of rearranging in our home. I have no plans to by anything major, but just do a little switch-a-roo with different pieces from other rooms.

If you’re dying to hit the refresh button on your home, maybe doing a little pillow switch-a-roo is just the update you’re looking for too.

See how this room looked like before the pillow switch-a-roo here, and past room tours here and here. You’ll notice I’m pretty consistent.

huzzah!

This week’s learned, links, and thankfulness…

Got a lot of work done on the WOVENFOLK website. I have to finalize a couple shipping things and the site should be ready for launch! I’m hoping this week.

Thankful state testing is done! *all the praise hands*

I don’t know if I could rock yellow, but totally loving the vibes of this outfit.

So disappointed in the lack of stock in Everlane and the glitch in the system. It said the day heel would be back May 4th, then got changed to May 7th, but it actually came back in stock May 4th (I emailed and they said the wrong date was a system glitch… argh!), and I missed out. Oye!

Anyone know where I can find this constellation coat rack here in the US?

I’ve totally loved the spring/summer shoes Gap has been putting out lately. These mules and this braided sandal.

This vintage piece is the perfect beach layering piece.

I want to read 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You.

My former pastor passed away last Sunday. His life created such a ripple effect for eternity and it reminds me that only things done in and for Jesus Christ will last. One of my fondest memories is the joy that overflowed when he led us in singing “In My Heart There Rings a Melody.” One of the verses is… I love the Christ who died on Calv’ry, for He washed my sins away; He put within my heart a melody, And I know it’s there to stay. Pastor Ed lived with the melody of Jesus Christ in his heart.

I’m curious, what sorts of things would you like to see in this space? More crafts, homeschooling, fashion, recipes, or simply day-to-day stories?

Happy weekending!

DIY lightsabers

May 4, 2017

DIY Lightsabers

Supplies:
Cardboard paper roll (best from a wrapping paper roll, or paper towel rolls work for a smaller lightsabers)
Duck tape (silver & black for the base; green, blue, purple, or red for the blade)
Black Sharpie marker
Non-stick scissors

Directions:
1. Wrap the base of the roll with the silver duck tape to make the lightsaber handle. Cut a strip of duck tape and wrap around. We used for 4 strips to make the handle of the lightsaber.

2. For the rest of the roll, cover completely with the duck tape color chosen for the blade. Lightsabers blades typically come in green, blue, red, and purple.

3. Cut out 5 thin strips of black duck tape, and space them out on the bottom of the handle to create the lightsaber power cells.

4. Lastly, draw a black circle on the handle to turn on your lightsaber. Technically, this is called the “blade length adjust button”.

This is a project my girls came up with! They first made it about 3 years ago, before they had official lightsaber toys. It’s also one of the most frequently made things in our house. I always keep cardboard rolls for them to make lightsabers. They have plenty of duels with them, and you can imagine they eventually get bent out of shape, so then they make more. If you have little Star Wars geeks in your home, I think this is a craft they would definitely love to make! If you happen to catch this post on May 4th, the girls share a little Instagram video on how to make these lightsabers. Check it out here.

May the FOURTH be with you!

easy crepe paper flowers

May 4, 2017

Easy Crepe Paper Flowers

Supplies:
Wooden skewers
Crepe paper streamers
Floral tape
Craft glue

Directions:
1. For shorter stems, break skewers in half. Add a dollop of glue at the top of the stick, and wrap the crepe paper around. To make the flower head, wrap the crepe paper around, and pinch and glue as you go. Continue to wrap around until you have your desired fullness.

2. Tear off a piece of streamer for the leaves. Wrap the floral tape around the base of the flower head, insert leaves in the middle of the stem, then continue wrapping all the way down the stem.

Make a bunch and put together a small bouquet for Mother’s Day gifts. Maybe add a little note that reads, “Roses are red, violets are blue, if you were a flower, I’d definitely pick you!”

If you need more ideas, here are some we’ve made in the past… gifts made from kid art, clay necklace, pin-on paper flower corsage, or make a giant Mother’s Day posters.
